All About Rugs

Hello!

I hope you’re ok and not feeling too cold. It really is chilly at the moment isn’t it?

In two of the room designs I have completed this month I have selected rugs for my clients so I thought it would be a good idea to have a chat about them.

So, do you need a rug? Let’s take a look at some of the benefits a rug has on your home.

1.      COMFORT AND WARMTH

Rugs are soft to walk on and make a huge difference to hard floors by creating a more cosy feeling to a space. They can be an affordable way to make your room feel more comfortable depending on the material you choose for your rug. The softest rug I have ever stood on is the Fur Dave from Benuta, your feet sink into this faux fur rug which comes in various shapes, sizes and colours. I will definitely be purchasing one for my office which I previously mentioned to you all and if you like a super soft material under your feet I would highly recommend taking a look at this one. It is made from 100% polyester which although means it may flatten in time in high traffic areas, it is affordable, easy to clean and flame retardant.

Rugs also really warm up a room, particularly in winter, which will make a space more inviting to guests. If you want to keep a large hard floored room warm an area rug which covers the majority of the floor space is a good idea. I recently selected an area rug for a client for their bedroom which has original hardwood floor boards. They love the floorboards and obviously wanted to keep them but they also wanted to make the room feel cosy as it is their relaxing chill out space. Another additional benefit of the area rug in this room is that less heat will be lost through the floorboards, keeping the room even warmer.

If you’re worried about the heat in a room, a wool rug is a great addition. Soft and luxurious, it will help keep homes warm in winter and cool in summer. It is durable as it survives heavy foot traffic well and is easy to clean and maintain. Other added benefits are that wool is hypoallergenic therefore a good choice in homes with allergy sufferers.

2.      AESTHETICALLY PLEASING

Aside from practical benefits, rugs can be aesthetically pleasing and make such a difference to the design and colour palette of a room. They can add colour, pattern and texture and give an opportunity to express your style in a room. If you have a fairly neutral room and want to change the colours up a bit, rugs are an affordable and simple way to do this without hanging wallpaper or painting walls.

Rugs can also be used to zone a space. If you have a living/dining room and you want to define the living room for example, a rug, along with furniture placement, is visually pleasing way of doing this. Of course, they can be moved! So if you want to change up your room, they can be trialled in another area.

 3.      NOISE REDUCTION

Finally, rugs can reduce noise and echoes in your home. They absorb sound therefore making the sound of footsteps less and create a quieter atmosphere. They also soften the sound of chairs moving across them. This is especially beneficial in rooms with hard flooring. And a rug will not only absorb the sound but protect your floor from scratches.

I cannot wait to get rug for my home office, I’ve already chosen the Benuta Dave Fur rug just haven’t quite decided which shape or colour yet, that will come when I detail my design but I will of course keep you all up to date with that.

I hope you all have a wonderful February and I will speak to you in March when we are one step closer to Spring!
